Flea treatment for dogs in New Zealand

    Introduction

New Zealand’s mild climate lets fleas linger year-round, with spikes after warm rain. The fix is a steady prevention schedule plus a simple home routine. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    What actually works in NZ

Fleas live most of their life off your dog in carpets, rugs and bedding. That’s why you treat the dog and the home together. Choose a proven preventive you can give on time every month (or a long-acting option), then run a short clean-up to clear hidden stages.

Choosing a method for your dog

Most Kiwi dogs do well on oral chews, which aren’t affected by swimming or baths. Collars can help if fitted correctly and worn all the time. Pick the format you’ll reliably give on schedule, and treat every dog in the home on the same day.

    Quick start plan

    • Dose today using the correct weight band and minimum age

    • Set a repeating phone reminder

    • If fleas are visible: vacuum daily for a week, hot-wash bedding, then shift to weekly for three months

    House routine that speeds results

Vacuum rugs, sofa seams and car mats and empty the vacuum outside. Wash pet bedding hot and dry well. Declutter sleeping spots so cleaning is fast. These steps help break the life cycle while prevention does the heavy lifting.

    Products we trust

    Safety basics

    • Dog products for dogs only

    • Dose to today’s weight; never split chews

    • Avoid stacking different preventives unless your vet advises

    • If your dog travels to Australia, ask your vet about adding heartworm cover

    FAQ

    How long until fleas stop?
You’ll often see fewer within a few days, but new adults can emerge for weeks. Stay on time with dosing and keep the clean-up going.

We dosed but still see the odd flea. Normal?
Yes. Hidden stages keep appearing for a while. Consistency clears them.
