December in New Zealand is a busy mix of heat, holidays, visitors, and long summer days. It’s a brilliant time of year, but it can catch our pets off guard. A few simple steps can help them stay cool, calm, and healthy right through the festive season. Here are my go to tips as your friendly local Kiwi vet.
December heat can sneak up fast. Make sure your pets always have fresh, cool water available. Pop a second water bowl outdoors so they have options. If you’re heading away for the day, leave extra water or use a pet-safe fountain to keep things flowing.
Cats and dogs struggle more than we think in warm, sticky weather. Give them shady spots outside and cool indoor areas to retreat to. Avoid exercise in the hottest part of the day. Early morning or late evening walks are much safer.
Summer brings a real spike in fleas across New Zealand, and ticks show up more often around bush tracks and the North Island. Staying on top of your flea, tick, and worming treatments saves a lot of trouble later. If you’ll be away over Christmas, set reminders so doses don’t get missed.
Visitors, new smells, and Christmas chaos can stress even the calmest pets. Give them a quiet, safe spot to hide if things get busy. Remind kids and guests to let pets come to them on their own terms. If fireworks worry your dog, chat with your vet early about calming options.
Many classic Christmas foods are dangerous for pets. Keep chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and fatty meats well out of reach. Offer pet-friendly treats instead. If your pet does eat something they shouldn’t, ring your local vet clinic straight away.
If your pets come with you on holiday, plan ahead. Pack their regular food, a comfy bed, meds, and parasite protection. Keep cats secured in carriers and dogs clipped in with a proper restraint. For pets staying at home with a sitter, leave clear feeding instructions and emergency contacts.
Heat and humidity can trigger itchy skin, hotspots, and ear issues. Give your pets a quick check every few days. Look for redness, scratching, or funky smells in the ears. Early treatment is always easier than a full-blown flare up.
December is meant to be relaxing, but it can be a tricky month for our pets. A little planning goes a long way in keeping them happy, healthy, and comfortable.

Vomiting can be caused by anything from a simple tummy upset to something more serious. The key is knowing what is normal, what is not, and when your dog needs a checkup.
