How to read flea and tick product labels in New Zealand

    Introduction

Labels look busy, but a quick checklist keeps pets safe and on schedule. Use this guide each time you buy or dose so you always match species, weight and timing.

    The label checklist

Species: Dog or cat only. Never use a dog product on a cat.
Weight band: Buy for today’s weight. Do not split chews to make a size.
Minimum age: Check weeks of age and any special directions for puppies or kittens.
What it covers: Fleas, ticks and sometimes worms. Dogs that travel may need heartworm cover.
How often: Monthly or longer-acting. Put the interval in your calendar.
How to give: Chew, spot-on or collar. Follow the specific directions for placement or fit.
Water advice: Chews are not affected by water. Spot-ons need dry time per the label.
Warnings: Read cautions and interactions, especially if your pet has health issues or takes other medicines.
Storage and expiry: Store cool and dry and note the expiry date.

    Missed or mixed doses

If you miss a dose, give it when you remember and reset the schedule from that date. Do not double-dose unless the label or your vet says so. Avoid stacking different preventives unless your vet advises.
