Why risk is higher outside the city
Rural and coastal areas have more ticks, stray-dog contact, livestock zones, standing water and wildlife. Mosquitoes are active most of the year. A clear plan keeps your pet comfortable and safe.
What to expect in common spots
Farm barangays: Ticks in kennels and resting areas, scavenging, shared bowls and soil-borne worms.
Resorts and beaches: Ticks in landscaped grounds, sand fleas around resting spots, salt and sand on skin, and heavy mosquito activity at dusk.
Provincial towns: Stray or free-roaming dogs and cats, markets and rubbish areas that attract pests, puddles after rain.
Your 7-day prep before you go
Day 7: Weigh your pet. Make sure you have the correct weight band.
Day 5: Check that your flea and tick cover will last for the whole trip.
Day 3: Wash bedding and pack a washable throw.
Day 2: Add a tick remover, wipes, spare ID tag and your vet’s number to the bag.
Day 1: If due soon, give the dose today. Chews go with food. Spot-ons go on clean, dry skin.
Daily routine while you are away
Do a 60-second tick check each evening. Focus on ears, neck, armpits and between toes.
Keep pets on lead in busy areas. Avoid nose-to-nose contact with strays.
Seal food and clear leftovers to reduce scavenging and worm risk.
Rinse off salt and sand, then dry the coat well.
Avoid puddles, flood water and communal bowls.
Farm and yard habits that help
Sun-dry or hot-wash bedding.
Vacuum mats, car seats and crate pads.
Trim grass around sleeping spots.
Clean kennel cracks and raised decks where ticks hide.
Product formats to discuss with your vet
Choose what you can give on time, every time.
Dogs, monthly all-in-one chew: Examples include Simparica Trio. Helps cover heartworm plus common parasites on one schedule.
Dogs, monthly flea and tick chew: Examples include NexGard.
Dogs, long-acting flea and tick options: Examples include Bravecto chew and Bravecto topical. Pair with a monthly heartworm preventive.
Dogs, tick collars: Examples include Seresto. Check fit often and avoid doubling the same active with other products.
Cats, broad monthly spot-ons: Examples include Revolution Plus or Revolution Original.
Cats, long-acting external control: Examples include Bravecto spot-on.
Simple safety tips
Match species and the correct weight band each time.
Never use dog products on cats.
Do not combine treatments unless your vet advises it.
Keep spot-on application sites away from children and other pets until dry.
If your pet is ill, pregnant, senior, very young or on other medicines, ask your vet first.
If you find a tick
Use fine tweezers or a tick tool. Hold close to the skin and pull straight out with steady pressure. Clean the bite site and your hands. Watch for weakness, wobbliness, fever, vomiting or fast breathing and contact a vet if you see any of these.
Coming home
Hot-wash bedding, vacuum the car and soft crates, and reset your next due dates in your phone. If you visited a tick-heavy area, keep daily checks going for two weeks.
FAQ
Do indoor cats that travel to a beach condo need protection
Often yes. New places bring new risks. Keep monthly prevention on time and do quick checks after balcony or hallway adventures.
My dog swims every day at the beach. Should I switch formats
Many owners choose chews for frequent swimmers. If you prefer a spot-on, time dosing away from swim days and follow the label’s wait window.
Can I use a collar plus a chew
Sometimes, but do not double the same active ingredient. Ask your vet before combining products.
We missed a dose on holiday. What now
Give it as soon as you remember and reset your schedule from that date. If heartworm prevention is late, ask your vet about testing and timing.
