Travel with Pets in the Philippines: Parasite Protection for Road Trips and Ferries

    Why plan ahead
Trips raise parasite risk. New places mean new fleas and ticks. Mosquitoes are active most of the year. A little prep keeps your pet comfortable so you can enjoy the journey.

    Your 7-day countdown

    • Day 7: Check stock and weight. Make sure you have the correct pack for today’s weight.

    • Day 5: If you use a long-acting product, confirm coverage runs through your whole trip.

    • Day 3: Wash bedding and vacuum the car. Start a quick nightly tick check.

    • Day 2: Check ferry or hotel pet rules. Confirm crates, papers and muzzles if required.

    • Day 1: Dose today if you are due in the next week. Spot-ons go on clean, dry skin. Chews go with food.

    • Travel day: Pack treatments in your day bag so you do not miss a dose.

    Pack this

    • Correct parasite product for your pet’s weight band

    • Tick remover or fine tweezers

    • Copies of vet records and your vet’s phone number

    • Wipes, poop bags and a small rubbish bag

    • Washable throw or bed cover

    • Spare ID tag with your mobile number

    • Water, bowl and a small towel

    Ferry, road and hotel tips

    • Keep dogs on lead in ports and stops. Avoid dog-dense waiting areas when you can.

    • Do a quick nose-to-tail tick check each evening. Focus on head, ears, neck and between toes.

    • If you use spot-ons, follow label wait times before baths or swims. In humid weather, allow extra drying time.

    • Keep food sealed and bins closed to reduce scavenging and worm risk.

    Beach, farm and province stays

    • Rinse salt and sand after swims and dry the coat well.

    • Trim grass around resting areas if you can. Avoid long grass at dusk and dawn.

    • In farm barangays, check daily for ticks and remove them with a tick tool.

    • Keep cats indoors at night to limit mosquito and tick exposure.

    Coming home

    • Hot-wash bedding. Vacuum car seats, mats and sofa gaps. Empty the vacuum outside.

    • Reconfirm your next due dates in your phone.

    • If you visited tick-heavy spots, keep daily checks going for two weeks.

Product formats to discuss with your vet
Choose what you can give on time, every time.

    • Dogs, monthly all-in-one chew: Examples include Simparica Trio. Helps cover heartworm plus common parasites on one schedule.

    • Dogs, monthly flea and tick chew: Examples include NexGard.

    • Dogs, long-acting flea and tick options: Examples include Bravecto chew and Bravecto topical. Pair with a separate monthly heartworm preventive.

    • Cats, broad monthly spot-on with tick cover: Examples include Revolution Plus.

    • Cats, monthly broad cover without ticks: Examples include Revolution Original.

    • Cats, long-acting external control: Examples include Bravecto spot-on.

    Simple safety tips

    • Weigh your pet and match the correct pack every time.

    • Use dog products on dogs only. Never use dog products on cats.

    • Do not combine treatments unless your vet advises it.

    • For spot-ons, keep children and other pets away from the site until dry.

    • Store products cool and dry.

    • If your pet is ill, pregnant, very young, senior, or on other medicines, ask your vet first.

    FAQ

Should I switch to a chew if my dog swims a lot
Many owners do. Chews are not affected by swimming. If you prefer a spot-on, plan application away from swim days and follow the label’s wait time.

Do indoor cats need cover on holiday
Often yes. New places bring new risks. Keep monthly prevention on time and do quick checks if you visit tick areas.

What if I find a tick on the trip
Remove it with a tick tool or fine tweezers held close to the skin. Pull straight out. Keep the tick if your vet wants to see it and watch your pet for any changes.

I’m moving from a monthly all-in-one chew to a long-acting flea and tick product. What about heartworm
Add a separate monthly heartworm preventive and keep both schedules on time. Your vet can help you line up the dates.
