Misinformation makes prevention harder than it needs to be. Here are the myths we hear most often, and the simple facts to follow instead. Reviewed with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.
Fleas hitchhike on clothing, parcels and second-hand rugs. Indoor heating lets hidden stages keep cycling. Maintain a steady schedule and a light weekly clean.
New Zealand’s mild climate and warm homes keep fleas going year round. Keep your routine the whole year.
Adults die quickly, but eggs and pupae keep emerging for weeks. Stay on time and keep vacuuming and hot-washing bedding for at least three months.
They may remove dirt but they do not provide ongoing protection. Use products designed for pets and follow the label.
Most collars must stay on continuously to work as intended. Fit them snugly so you can slide two fingers underneath and check weekly.
“Natural” does not guarantee safe or effective. Some oils irritate skin or cats’ airways. Check with your vet before trying alternatives.
