Ferry travel with pets in NZ: flea, tick and worm checklist

    Introduction

Inter-island and regional ferries add queues, sea spray and shared pet areas. A simple plan covers timing, clean bedding and a quick tidy after the crossing so hitchhiker stages do not come home.

    Before you sail

Dose a few days before departure so protection is active on day one of your trip. Reweigh pets and confirm the correct band. If your next dose falls during travel, pack it with clear notes.

    Pack light

    • Tick tool or fine-tipped tweezers

    • Spare bed cover or crate liner

    • Wipes and a small towel

    • Rubbish bags and a zip bag for any vacuum contents if you empty one on the road

    During the crossing

Use the facility your ticket allows, whether pet-friendly cabin, car stay or kennel area. Keep bedding clean and dry. Offer water and shade away from wind and spray.

    On arrival

Rinse off salt and dust, then towel dry to the skin. Shake out travel rugs and air them in the sun. In pet-friendly stays, cover soft beds and vacuum seams before checkout if you can.
