Heatwaves and parasites in New Zealand — keep pets protected

    Introduction

Hot, still days accelerate parasite life cycles. Fleas hatch faster in soft furnishings, ticks stay active in shaded greenery, and everyone is outdoors more. Keep prevention on schedule and layer in a few heat-smart habits so pets stay comfortable.

    A heat-smart routine

Start with timing: give prevention on or just before your house dose day. Indoors, aim for cool and dry — fans or air-con help, and lifting beds off the floor improves airflow. Outdoors, short grass and trimmed shrubs make quick tick checks more effective. Refresh water bowls often and tip out standing water around pots.

    Add these simple habits

    • Exercise at dawn or dusk; rest during peak heat

    • Rinse salt and sand after beach trips; towel dry

    • Keep travel mats and car crates clean and aired

    Daily checks you won’t forget

Make it part of the evening wind-down. As you brush or pat your pet, feel along the ear edges and under the collar, then run a hand to the armpits, groin, between the toes and tail base. If you find a tick, remove it with a tick tool or fine tweezers — close to the skin, straight out, steady pressure.

    FAQ

My dog swims daily in a heatwave. Will protection hold?
Chews aren’t affected by water. For spot-ons, plan beach days around label dry times.

Do indoor cats need anything extra in hot spells?
Keep the room cool and dry, wash bedding more often, and stay on schedule with a monthly spot-on.
