Flea control for apartment dwelling cats in New Zealand

    Introduction

Indoor apartments feel safe, yet fleas still arrive on clothing, parcels and second-hand rugs. A reliable spot-on schedule plus a light weekly clean keeps things calm. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    What works best indoors

Most apartment cats do well with a spot-on placed high on the neck where they cannot lick. Longer acting options reduce how often you handle your cat, which is handy in small spaces. Keep one house dose day so you never lose track.

    Application tips

    • Part the coat to clean, dry skin and apply high on the neck

    • Separate housemates that groom each other until the site is dry

    • Reward with a treat so the routine stays positive

    The easy weekly rhythm

Vacuum rugs, sofa seams and cat trees, then empty the vacuum outside or into a sealed bag. Hot-wash blankets and beds and dry them well. If you have recently seen fleas, keep this rhythm for three months while hidden stages clear.

    Doorways, balconies and carriers

Shake out welcome mats and carriers after vet trips. Rinse artificial grass patches and let trays dry fully. Keep pot saucers tipped out so mosquitoes do not breed.

    Products we trust

    Safety basics

    • Cat-only products for cats

    • Match current weight band and minimum age

    • Do not stack different spot-ons unless your vet advises

    FAQ

Do indoor-only cats really need prevention
Yes. Hitchhiker stages can keep cycles going in soft furnishings.

My cat dislikes handling. Any ideas
Apply after a meal in a quiet room, use a towel perch for grip, and consider a longer acting option to reduce how often you apply.
