Heartworm in the Philippines: What Dog Owners Need to Know

    What is heartworm?
Heartworm is a worm that lives in the blood vessels of the lungs and the heart. It is carried by mosquitoes. One bite can pass on infection to an unprotected dog.

    How dogs catch it
A mosquito bites an infected animal, then bites your dog later. The tiny larvae enter the bloodstream and grow over months. Early infection is often silent.

    Signs to watch
Many dogs look normal at first. Later you may see coughing, exercise intolerance, weight loss, or a swollen belly. Do not wait for signs. Prevention and testing are the safest path.

    Why testing matters
Adult dogs should have a quick heartworm test before starting prevention if:

    • They have never used prevention,

    • Prevention has been missed for more than a month, or

    • Their history is unknown, such as rescues or newly adopted dogs.
Puppies usually start prevention on schedule, then test later as advised by your vet.

    Prevention that works
Choose one method and use it on time, every time. Monthly preventives are common and effective when given correctly. Examples you may hear about from vets include Simparica Trio and NexGard Spectra as monthly chews that prevent heartworm while also covering common external parasites. Some clinics also offer other monthly options or long-acting vet-administered solutions. Your vet can confirm what is available locally and what fits your dog.

    Dosing basics

    • Weigh your dog and choose the correct pack.

    • Give monthly products on the same date each month.

    • Set phone reminders so you do not miss doses.

    • Read the label every time.

    If you missed a dose

    • Give it as soon as you remember.

    • If the dose is more than two weeks late, ask your vet about a test and how to reset your schedule.

    • Do not double up without advice.

    Mosquito-smart habits

    • Use prevention year round.

    • Clear standing water in yards and balconies.

    • Use screens and keep dogs indoors at peak mosquito times when possible.

    • Pair prevention with reliable flea and tick control to keep skin healthy.

    Travel and multi-pet homes

    • Keep all dogs on prevention. Skipping one pet leaves a risk in the household.

    • If your dog travels between islands or stays in resort areas with strong mosquito activity, stay strict with timing. Take product with you.

    Safety notes

    • Use dog products on dogs only.

    • Do not combine treatments unless your vet advises it.

    • If your dog is unwell, pregnant, or on other medicines, speak with your vet before starting or switching products.

    • Cats can also be affected by heartworm. Ask your vet about prevention if you live with cats.

    FAQ

Do indoor dogs in the Philippines need heartworm prevention
Yes. Mosquitoes get indoors. Year-round prevention is recommended.

Can I use a flea and tick product instead of a heartworm preventive
Not necessarily. Many flea and tick products do not prevent heartworm. Choose a product that specifically lists heartworm prevention or combine products under vet guidance.

Is there a cure if my dog tests positive
There are treatment protocols, but they are lengthy, costly and require strict rest. Prevention is far safer and simpler.

Monthly chew or other options. Which should I pick
Pick the option you can give on time, every time. Monthly chews suit many homes. Your vet can confirm the best fit for your dog, your budget and what is available locally.
