Why heat planning matters
Dogs feel heat more than we do. Humidity makes cooling harder. A few small habits prevent heat stress and keep skin healthy in the tropics.
Daily routine checklist
Walk early or late. Aim for shade and short sessions at midday.
Test the pavement. If it is too hot for your palm in 5 seconds, it is too hot for paws.
Carry water. Offer small drinks often.
Rest breaks. Stop if your dog pants hard, slows down, or lies down.
Wipe downs. A damp cloth on belly, armpits and groin helps after walks.
Cool spot at home. Use fans or air-con if you have it. Provide airflow where your dog sleeps.
Hydration and feeding
Fresh water in more than one bowl. Change twice daily.
Add a second water bowl in the coolest room.
Feed after exercise, not before.
Keep treats light on hot days. Rich snacks can upset tummies.
Heat risk signs
Panting hard, bright red gums, drooling, wobbling, vomiting, collapse. Move to a cool place, offer small sips of water, and contact a vet at once if you see these signs.
Skin and coat care in humidity
Brush often to lift loose hair and improve airflow.
Rinse off salt, sand and pool water. Dry the coat well.
Use gentle shampoo as advised by your vet. Do not over-bathe.
Check ears after swimming. Dry the outer ear flap.
Look for hotspots. Warm, painful, moist patches that spread fast need a vet.
Parasite protection that fits the tropics
Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes are active most of the year in the Philippines. Pick a plan you can give on time, every time.
Monthly all-in-one chew options to ask your vet about include Simparica Trio. These help cover heartworm plus common parasites.
Monthly flea and tick chews include NexGard.
Long-acting flea and tick options include Bravecto chew and Bravecto topical.
If you choose a long-acting flea and tick product, pair it with a monthly heartworm preventive. Ask your vet to line up dates.
Water play and products
Chews suit frequent swimmers.
If you prefer a spot-on, apply to clean, dry skin and follow the label’s wait time before baths, beach or pool.
In humid weather, allow extra drying time and keep kids and other pets away from the site until dry.
Simple safety rules
Weigh your dog and choose the correct pack each time.
Use dog products on dogs only.
Do not combine treatments unless your vet advises it.
Store products cool and dry.
If your dog is ill, pregnant, senior, very young, or on other medicines, speak with your vet first.
Travel and outings
Pack water, a collapsible bowl, a towel and a tick remover.
Do a 60-second tick check each evening. Focus on ears, neck and between toes.
Wash bedding hot and vacuum car seats after trips.
FAQ
How much water does my dog need in hot weather
Enough that urine stays pale and your dog is not panting hard at rest. Offer small, frequent drinks. If you are unsure, ask your vet for a volume guide based on weight and activity.
Can I shave my dog to keep cool
Light trimming can help airflow, but very short clips can expose skin to sunburn. Ask your groomer or vet what suits your dog’s coat.
Is a cooling mat or vest worth it
Many dogs settle better with them. Keep them clean and let your dog choose to use or leave it.
Monthly or long-acting parasite control. Which is better in our climate
Both work when used on time. Monthly suits routine lovers and can include heartworm prevention. Long-acting reduces how many dates you remember, but you may add a separate heartworm plan.
What if my dog hates tablets
Ask your vet about alternatives. Some dogs do better with a spot-on. Start the new product when the previous one would have been due.
