Flea season in Australia: simple steps that work

    Introduction

Warm, humid weather wakes flea populations. Once you see a few, there are many more in the home environment. The fix is a steady routine for pets and a short burst of house clean-up. This guide was prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    What “flea season” really means

    • Eggs and larvae sit in carpets, rugs, cracks, and pet bedding

    • Vibrations and warmth trigger hatching

    • You treat the pet and the house at the same time for best results

    First-week plan

    • Dose every pet in the home with a proven product matched to species, weight, and age

    • Vacuum daily for the first week (rugs, skirting, sofas, car) and empty the vacuum outside

    • Hot wash pet bedding and favourite blankets, then dry well

    • Declutter sleeping spots so you can clean quickly

    Keep momentum for three months

    • Stay on time with monthly or long-acting products

    • Keep up a weekly vacuum and regular washing

    • Treat all pets on the same day; untreated pets keep the cycle going

    Travel and visitors

    • Dose a few days before trips so protection is active

    • Ask visitors not to bring unprotected pets during outbreaks

    Products we trust

    Safety basics

    • Dog products for dogs, cat products for cats

    • Match current weight band and minimum age

    • Do not stack preventatives unless your vet advises

    • Keep cats away from recently treated dogs if the dog label advises it

    FAQ

Why are fleas still jumping after I dosed?
Larvae and pupae keep emerging for a few weeks. Stay on time and keep cleaning; numbers fall as the environment clears.

Do indoor-only pets need prevention in flea season?
Yes. Fleas hitchhike in on people, clothing, and other pets.
