Puppies are curious, social, and close to the floor — perfect targets for fleas. Good prevention keeps them comfortable and protects the home. This guide was prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.
Start as soon as your chosen product’s minimum age and weight allow. Weigh your puppy often. Move to the next weight band as they grow. If your puppy is too young or small for a product, focus on house hygiene and daily flea combing until you can start.
Chews suit bath and beach puppies because the medicine works from the inside.
Spot-ons are handy for fussy eaters, but the coat must stay dry for the period on the label.
Pick the format you can give on time, every time. Never split doses or mix different flea products unless your vet tells you to.
Most products are monthly. A few last longer. Set a phone reminder. If you use different products for different parasites, follow the shortest interval so you do not leave gaps.
Give it as soon as you remember, then reset your reminder from today. If you missed by more than a couple of weeks, treat all pets and refresh the home clean-up.
Use dog-only products on dogs. Never apply a dog product to a cat.
Choose the correct weight band and check minimum age on the pack.
Some dog spot-ons contain permethrin. Keep cats away from recently treated dogs as labels advise.
Ask your vet before starting any product if your puppy is unwell or on other medicines.
Vacuum carpets, rugs, sofas, and car seats. Empty the vacuum outside.
Hot wash puppy bedding and washable throws. Dry thoroughly.
Comb daily for the first couple of weeks to remove adults while the product takes effect.
Keep going for three months to clear hidden life stages.
Simparica Trio Chewable Tablet for Dogs — monthly chew with broad parasite cover.
NexGard Chewables for Dogs — monthly flea and tick chew.
Bravecto Chew for Dogs — long-lasting chew per label.
When can I start flea prevention for my puppy?
When your puppy meets the minimum age and weight on the pack. If you are unsure, ask your vet.
My puppy swims a lot. Should I use a spot-on or chew?
Chews are usually simpler for frequent bathers and swimmers.
What if my puppy vomits after a chew?
Call your vet for advice. Do not re-dose unless your vet says it is safe.
