Shedding ramps up in spring and often again in autumn. Loose undercoat traps flea dirt and makes bites harder to spot. A simple grooming and cleaning plan pairs well with year-round prevention. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.
More loose hair means warm, shaded spots close to the skin
Grooming spreads flea dirt to beds, rugs and the car
Brushing sessions reveal trouble early if you look for flea dirt
Brush short coats a few times a week and long coats daily during peak shed
Use a fine flea comb around the neck, rump and tail base
Wipe combs onto a damp white tissue; brown specks that turn red are flea dirt
Keep sessions calm and short so pets enjoy them
Vacuum rugs, sofa seams and car mats; empty the vacuum outside
Hot wash bedding and favourite blankets, then dry well
Declutter sleeping spots so clean-ups are quick
Keep this up weekly for three months if you saw fleas
Dose every pet on the same day
Set a repeating reminder and store products together, high and dry
If you use different products for different parasites, follow the shortest interval so you do not leave gaps
