After rain parasite surge: protect Aussie pets

    Introduction

Heavy rain and warm days flip the switch for parasites. Flea eggs hatch, ticks quest higher on vegetation, and mosquitoes breed in puddles. Here’s a short plan to keep pets comfortable and covered. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

Fast wins in the first week

    • Dose every pet on time using a registered product matched to species, age and weight

    • Vacuum daily for a week (rugs, skirting, sofas, car). Empty the vacuum outside

    • Hot wash bedding and favourite blankets, then dry well

    • Yard tidy: cut long grass, clear leaf litter, tip out standing water

    Tick checks after wet weather

Do quick hands-on checks once a day in risk regions: lips, ear edges, under collar, armpits, groin, between toes and tail base. Re-check after bush or beach walks.

    Travel and weekends away

Dose a few days before you go so protection is active. Pack the next dose if your due date lands while you’re away. Keep a tick tool or fine-tipped tweezers in your bag.

    Safe tick removal

Grip close to the skin with a tick tool or fine-tipped tweezers and lift straight out with steady pressure. Keep the tick in a sealed container. Watch your pet for 24–48 hours.
