Killing fleas in the home: a simple Australian guide

    Introduction

Most of the flea problem lives off your pet in carpets, bedding, and floor gaps. The goal is to stop new fleas emerging and jumping on. You do that by treating every pet on schedule and running a short, repeatable clean-up routine.

    Why homes stay “flea-y”

Flea eggs fall off pets into your home. They hatch into larvae that hide deep in fabric and cracks. Larvae turn into pupae inside cocoons. Adults then emerge when they sense warmth and vibration. This is why you can still see fleas for a while after you start a good product on your pet.

    The home routine that works

    1. Vacuum carpets, rugs, sofas, and car seats at least twice a week early on. Use the crevice tool along skirting boards and under furniture. Empty the vacuum outside.

    2. Hot wash pet bedding, throw rugs, and washable covers. Dry thoroughly.

    3. Declutter resting spots so there are fewer fabric “nests” to hide in.

    4. Flea comb daily for the first couple of weeks. Dip the comb in soapy water between strokes.

    5. Treat every pet with a species-appropriate product and dose on time for at least three months to clear hidden stages.

Things that do not solve the problem

    • One-off deep cleans without ongoing pet treatment

    • Vinegar, lemon, or herbal sprays on carpets or pets

    • “Flea baths” alone without a product with lasting effect

When to call in extra help

Heavy infestations can need professional pest control for the environment. Keep pets out of treated areas as advised, and keep using your pet’s product on time.

    FAQ

How long until my home is clear?
Most homes improve within a few weeks. Allow three months of on-time dosing and regular cleaning to break the cycle fully.

Do I need to treat all pets?
Yes. Treat every dog and cat in the home with a species-safe product. Untreated pets keep the cycle going.

I keep vacuuming but still see fleas. What now?
Stay consistent. Vacuuming helps trigger pupae to emerge so adults can be controlled. Stick with your dosing schedule and keep bedding on a hot wash cycle.
