A flea comb is a simple tool that helps you find fleas and give your pet quick relief. It does not replace a registered product, but it is useful for checking progress and removing adults. This step-by-step guide from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc, shows you how to do it safely.
Fine-tooth flea comb
Bowl of warm soapy water or diluted pet shampoo
Light-coloured towel
Good light and a calm spot
Set up your towel and bowl within reach.
Brush out knots with a regular brush so the flea comb can glide.
Start at the neck and work with the coat, moving to shoulders, back, flanks, belly, and tail base.
Comb slowly right to the skin. After each stroke, dip the comb into the soapy water to trap fleas.
Focus hot spots. Check around the tail base, groin, and armpits.
Check the towel for flea dirt. Flea dirt turns reddish-brown when dabbed with water.
Finish and clean. Rinse the comb and wash your hands.
Keep sessions short for wriggly dogs. If your dog swims often, chews are usually easier to keep consistent. Use the comb between monthly or long-acting doses to monitor progress.
Go gently and stop if your cat gets stressed. Many cats prefer a few short sessions across the day. Avoid essential oils on combs or coats. Some are unsafe for cats.
In the first two weeks of treatment, aim for daily or every other day. After that, once or twice a week is fine for spot checks. Expect to see fewer fleas over time as the home environment clears.
Treat every pet in the home with a species-safe, weight-banded product.
Stick to the label schedule. Set phone reminders.
Run a simple home routine: vacuum, hot-wash bedding, and declutter pet sleeping spots.
Keep going for at least three months to clear hidden stages.
Dog products for dogs only. Never use a dog product on a cat.
Pick the right weight band and check minimum age.
Do not stack different flea products unless your vet tells you to.
Dogs: NexGard Chewables for Dogs — monthly chew for fleas and ticks. Easy for bath and swim lovers.
Dogs: Bravecto Chew for Dogs — long-lasting chew. Helpful if you prefer fewer doses.
Cats: Revolution Plus Spot-On for Cats — monthly spot-on with broad cover when used as directed.
Will combing alone get rid of fleas
No. It helps remove adults and monitor progress, but you still need a registered product and a simple home routine.
How can I tell flea dirt from regular dirt
Place specks on a damp tissue. Flea dirt dissolves into a reddish-brown stain.
My pet hates combing. Any tips
Use very short sessions, offer treats, and try when your pet is sleepy. If it stays hard, focus on good product use and home cleaning instead.
