Why ticks matter
Ticks can make pets uncomfortable and unwell. Quick daily checks and on-time prevention lower risk. If your pet seems weak, wobbly, is vomiting, or breathing differently after a tick is found, contact your vet at once.
Where ticks show up in NZ
Risk rises after time in long grass, bush edges and farm paddocks. Check pets after walks, tramping trips, bach visits and stock work, especially in warmer months.
Do a 60-second tick check
-
Nose and muzzle. Feel around lips and under the chin.
-
Eyes, cheeks and ear edges. Look inside and behind the ears.
-
Neck and collar line. Part the coat to see the skin.
-
Armpits, between toes and belly.
-
Tail base and under the tail.
Remove collars while you check so you can see the skin underneath.
If you find a tick
-
Use a tick remover or fine tweezers held close to the skin.
-
Pull straight out with steady pressure.
-
Keep the tick if you can and note where you were walking.
-
Watch your pet. If you notice any worrying signs, call your vet.
Prevention that fits Kiwi homes
Choose an application you can give on time, every time. Match the correct weight band and read the label.

Dogs, monthly flea and tick chew: Nexgard chewables for dogs
-
Dogs, long-acting flea and tick chew: Bravecto chew for dogs
-
Cats, broad monthly spot-on with tick cover: Revolution Plus spot-on for cats
-

Bathing, swimming and grooming
If you use a spot-on, apply to clean, dry skin and let it dry fully. Follow the label for how long to wait before bathing or swimming. Brush around, not through, the application site for the first day or two.
Safety basics
-
Weigh your pet and choose the correct pack each time.
-
Use dog products on dogs only. Never use dog products on cats.
-
Do not combine treatments unless your vet advises it.
-
Keep spot-ons away from children and other pets until dry.
-
If your pet has a health condition, is pregnant or on other meds, ask your vet first.
FAQ
Do indoor pets in NZ still need tick checks
If they visit the bach, spend time outdoors, or live near bushy areas, yes. A quick hands-on check is a good habit in warmer months.
Are chews or spot-ons better
Both work when used correctly. Chews suit swimmers. Spot-ons suit homes that prefer a quick skin application. Pick the option you can give on time.
Can I use a flea collar instead
Collars can play a role for some dogs, but check fit often and avoid doubling up on the same active. Ask your vet if you plan to combine products.
