Flea control for long haired cats in New Zealand

    Introduction

Long coats hide flea dirt and make bites harder to spot. A steady spot-on routine, smart grooming and a simple home clean keep things calm for fluffier cats. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    Grooming that supports prevention

Work in layers so product can reach the skin and the coat stays tangle-free. Start with a wide-tooth comb for knots, follow with a slicker or pin brush, then finish with a quick flea-comb pass around the ruff, rump and tail base. Wipe the comb on a damp white tissue to check for black gritty flea dirt.

    Weekly rhythm

    • Full brush to the skin

    • Hot-wash blankets and beds, dry thoroughly

    • Vacuum rugs, sofa seams and cat trees, then empty the vacuum outside

    Spot-on application made easy

Part the coat to clean, dry skin and apply high on the neck where your cat cannot lick. If housemates groom each other, keep them apart until the site is dry. Apply on a quiet day after a meal and reward with a treat so the routine stays positive.

    Indoor and outdoor habits

Indoor cats still meet hitchhiker fleas on clothing and soft furnishings. Outdoor roamers need quick checks after busy days. A one-minute hand-over-coat scan at night helps you catch flare-ups early.

    Products we trust

    Safety basics

    • Cat-only products for cats

    • Match current weight band and minimum age

    • Do not stack different spot-ons unless your vet advises

    FAQ

My long haired cat mats behind the neck. Will that block spot-ons
Tidy small mats so the liquid reaches skin. Part the coat well and apply high on the neck.

We still see the odd flea after dosing. Is that normal
Yes. New adults can emerge for a few weeks. Stay on schedule and keep the weekly clean going.
