Some pets react to just one flea bite. That’s flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) — an intense itch that spirals into chewing, hair loss and scabs, especially over the rump and tail base. The good news: a steady prevention plan plus a short home routine usually settles things quickly.
Look for sudden, relentless scratching, nibbling at the tail base, red bumps or scabs, and “moth-eaten” hair along the back legs and belly. Cats may over-groom and leave gritty “flea dirt” on bedding.
Treat every pet in the home on the same day using the correct weight band. Vacuum daily for a week and hot-wash bedding; dry thoroughly. A gentle brush helps remove flea dirt and loose hair so skin can breathe. If your pet is miserable, speak to your vet — short-term anti-itch or anti-inflammatory medicines can break the itch–scratch cycle while prevention takes effect.
Keep prevention on schedule all year. Stick to one house dose day and set a repeating phone reminder. If you use long-acting products, add a mid-interval nudge so you don’t forget the next application. Re-weigh pets every couple of months to stay in the right band.

How fast will my pet stop scratching?
Many settle within days, but skin can take a couple of weeks to fully recover. Keeping prevention on time prevents new bites.
I can’t find fleas — could it still be FAD?
Yes. One bite can trigger a big reaction. Treat all pets and run the short clean-up.
