Parasite control for pregnant and lactating dogs

    Introduction

Parasites do not pause during pregnancy or nursing. Protection matters, but safety comes first. Always ask your vet before giving any product during pregnancy or lactation. This guide was prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    Core principles

    • Vet check first. Use only products your vet confirms are suitable for your dog’s stage and health.

    • Right weight band. Re-weigh late in pregnancy and after whelping.

    • No stacking. Avoid layering multiple preventatives unless your vet says it’s appropriate.

    • Treat every dog in the home. Unprotected pets keep the cycle going.

    • Clean environment. Vacuum, hot-wash bedding, and keep whelping areas dry and warm.

    Fleas and ticks

    • Keep bites off mum to reduce stress and scratching around the mammary area.

    • Daily hands-on tick checks in risk regions: lips, ears, under collar, armpits, groin, between toes, tail base.

    • Choose a format you can give on time. Chews suit bath and beach routines. Collars need correct fit and continuous wear. Confirm suitability in pregnancy with your vet.

    Heartworm and intestinal worms

    • Heartworm prevention is ongoing. If you have lapses, ask your vet whether testing is needed before restarting.

    • Puppies are at risk of roundworm and hookworm. Your vet will set a deworming plan for mum and pups.

    Simple routine

    1. Book a pre-breeding or early-pregnancy consult to confirm products.

    2. Put dose dates in your phone calendar.

    3. Keep the whelping area clean and change bedding often.

    4. Treat housemate pets on the same schedule.

    Products we trust

(Discuss with your vet for pregnancy and nursing suitability before use.)

    Safety you should always check

    • Dog products for dogs only.

    • Match weight band and minimum age.

    • Do not guess doses or split chews.

    • Stop and call your vet if you notice vomiting, diarrhoea, skin irritation, or unusual behaviour after dosing.

    FAQ

Should I change products when my dog becomes pregnant?
Ask your vet. Many households stay with a confirmed plan; others switch based on label advice and health history.

    What about the pups?
Your vet will set a worming schedule for puppies and advise when to start flea control safely.
